Five years ago, in India an estimate of a four hundred million population lived in rudimentary conditions. People used low-quality kerosene lamps which polluted the air, and also provided them with dim-light. A, further 100m homes were nominally connected to the grid but had alternate power at times when it was not required.
The backwardness of these rural areas has gathered attention of not only the planners, but also from those who are interested in all-round development of India.
The Ministry of New Renewable Energy (MNRE) is implementing the 'Remote Village Electrification Program' (RVEP) to electrify such remote villages by installing solar photovoltaic (SPV) home lighting systems all over the states. Central + State Government Financial Assistance for SPV systems is 80% to 90% available in many states.

The integral Village Development Model takes an integrated approach to community empowerment using a mix of solar energy solutions to improve the lives of people who don't have access to electricity.

The Power source i.e. the sun is absolutely free for everyone. Eventhough, it still amounts to some, 20,000 times more power than that is presently consumed by the entire World's Industrial facilities and heating plants. Globally or in India, Solar energy makes perfect sense as the solar radiance and other meteorological conditions mention that they we don't have the grid infrastructure or that in some areas sun rays are not available or are mostly available every 5 days.

However, even today 80 percent of rural INDIA does not abide with an electricity line.

Fortunately India is both densely populated and has high solar insulation, providing an ideal combination for solar power in India. The Government of India is planning to electrify 18,000 villages by year 2013 through renewable energy systems especially solar PV systems. This offers tremendous growth potential for Indian solar PV industry.

For our company, this program is a mode in order to develop sustainable technologies that are powered by sun, through adoption of solar-PV components. This arrangement is our initiative so we can help the poor households / shops or working stations in the rural India. We target the rural areas where grid connectivity is neither available nor feasible. Besides, this program focuses on areas, in India that is wired, but receives less than six hours of electricity a day on average per annum.

Near 45 caror Indians, rural households who will never be able to enter the economic mainstream, this drive will help them to enhance productivity, conditions of life, energy security as well as ecological security and button down the path to a low-carbon future.

This pursuit is to attain profit. Our team structures a plan in order to execute this program, with the assistance of our active tools and commands, as to destroy the fictitious story 'that the social ventures are not commercially viable or profitable'.

Our team has exposure to the rural / semi-rural areas of India; we acquired this exposure during the development of our home furnishing textile products, from the early eighties. In the eighties these products had no market space in the remote / rural / semi-rural areas. So, as you may have conceived, our team strengthened this business by supplying products to the traditional textiles shops dealing in dress material and saris.

At the initial stage these traditional textile vendors were not ready to entertain us and our products.

Our team worked hard to round up, and develop products with customized tools for e.g.: change in shifting of production from handlooms to power looms, color schemes, designs, yarn, thickness etc.

This attitude of boiling down products and technologies according our customer's needs was a result of our deep closeness with them and with our old production and marketing team.

This practice wasn't only for the poor or for the development of remote areas or for the expansion of our business, but this practice was necessary in that era; so we can have a reliable system for generations to come for our Handloom and Power Loom workers that worked in our factories.

This pursuit was also to attain profit, but for more than three decades our domestic business converted into an export oriented business in order to supply unique quality products to different companies in countries like: USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe etc.

This working edge advanced a victorious code in us: "the adoption of products and technologies as per customer's questions and requirements and linking them to the market". With this code, we found a center of attraction too: that the customization cannot be scaled out, as the circumstances in a rural area of Punjab is unlikely when compared with a rural area in Bihar.

The question of how a business takes shape of a viable and profitable venture? Has been answered by our team with a firm foot on the ground.

Our recommended idea of success when doing business in rural, remote areas, is to "entertain the costumer's wants, with customized needs, with affordable prices, without comprising the quality of the product, bringing result oriented hard work; tailoring products with the best available technologies and standards; of an as per customer's call".

Our R & D team has traveled one and a half year long to research in twelve Indian states (Assam, Bihar ,UP, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh Uttrakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan)in order to understand available opportunities for a solar PV Investor.

This study was an exercise so we could re-invent and dig into the depth in order to analyze what is moving and what is not.

In 1887, there were 121 (Edison) power stations in the United States delivering DC electricity to consumers. AC replaced DC in most instances of generation and power distribution, enormously extending the range and also improving the efficiency of power distribution. DC had the advantage that the large battery banks were able to maintain continuous power with some brief interruptions of the electric supply from generators and the transmission systems. After examining the history of Thomas Edison's first successful light bulb model used in public demonstration at Menlo Park, on December 1879 and associating it with the existing circumstances in the rural area of our Country. We acknowledged that there is a notable change in life of those 45 crore Indians and rural Indian households who for 134 years did not enter the economic mainstream and who were not connected with grid.

These abstracted footing deficiency of our Government policies and program of electrifying the rural and remote area, can also create opportunities for solar PV, which is the final solution after 134 years with the help of each and every economic and technical tool, component and customized system in order to carry away the darkness from the life of 7.8 core households in rural India without connecting a single wire to the grid.

MNRE should come out with a new mind set for off-grid giving it the same wastage policy compared to an on-grid policy. Our policy makers should change the view that the final solution for each household and each area is connectivity to the grid.
